Hayden Panettiere opens up about the return of her character Kirby in Scream 6. Scream 6 was quickly greenlit after the success of 2022's Scream, which was the franchise's fifth installment. Scream 2022 worked as a "requel," serving as a reboot and sequel to the series by bringing franchise veterans back along with a new cast. The film's success reinvigorated the franchise, which is set to continue with Scream 6 next year. Scream 6 is bringing back the same creative team from the fifth installment, with Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin directing from Guy Busick's and James Vanderbilt's scripts. And the franchise is set for another shakeup, with the setting shifting to New York.SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY
Scream 6 is also set to bring back Courteney Cox, who has appeared in the franchise. However, Neve Campbell has stated that she will not be involved, making it the first Scream film without series mainstay Sidney Prescott. Along with Cox, Scream 6 is also bringing back actors from Scream 2022, including Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown. Scream 6 also brings back Panettiere's Kirby, a fan-favorite character from Scream 4. While viewers saw Kirby killed in Scream 4, an easter egg in the fifth installment gave a nod that she may have survived her encounter with Ghostface. Now, Kirby is officially alive and set to appear in Scream 6, with Panettiere offering some insight on her return.

In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Panettiere spoke about her Scream 6 return, saying she went after the role. Panettiere stated that playing Kirby again was something she pursued, calling up those involved to ensure she had a place in the film. And while Panettiere was pushed on her character's level of involvement, being asked whether she makes it past the first kill, she didn't let anything slip but assured that viewers likely wouldn't be disappointed. Check out Panettiere's comments on her Scream 6 return below:
"I called them up myself and was like, 'So you guys don't like happen to want to bring Kirby back do you?' I did. I wanted to be in it that badly."
"I don't think I can, but I don't think anyone's going to be disappointed."
Scream 6 will serve as Panettiere's first acting role since Nashville in 2018. The actress has opened up recently about her struggles with postpartum depression and alcoholism, which saw her step away from the spotlight for a few years. Now, after taking some personal time to heal, the actress is making her triumphant return in Scream 6, which is something she is passionate about, given how she went after the part.
Scream 6 is currently filming, and while the filmmakers hope to keep things fresh, details outside of the setting and returning characters are scarce. The film is slated to release on March 31, 2023, barely a year past the release of Scream 2022. While audiences may not have many story details, Panettiere's Scream 6 return already offers a character viewers are eager to see.
