Insidious 5 Plot Details Reveal Film’s Timeline & Setting

New story details from Insidious 5 have been revealed. The Blumhouse horror franchise began with 2011's Insidious, a haunted house film directed by James Wan and written by Leigh Whannell, who had previously collaborated on Saw and Dead Silence. That film introduced Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai Lambert (Rose Byrne) and their sons Dalton (Ty Simpkins) and Foster (Andrew Astor). When Dalton begins to be haunted by horrifying apparitions from The Further, the family calls upon medium Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) to help, along with her bumbling sidekicks Specs (Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson). The first sequel followed the Lamberts yet again, while Insidious 3 and 4 were prequels showing some of the early adventures of Elise, Specs, and Tucker.

Although it's been five years since the most recent entry, Insidious: The Last Key, Insidious 5 is finally in production and coming to theaters on July 7, 2023. For the first time, neither Wan nor Whannell is writing or directing the upcoming entry, though they are keeping the project in the family. Wilson will be taking the reins, making his directorial debut while also reprising the role of Josh, working from a script from Halloween Kills and Firestarter scribe Scott Teems. Simpkins will also be returning as Dalton, though there is no word on if the film will feature the return of any other original Insidious cast members.

Today, Deadline released the most detailed plot synopsis yet for Insidious 5, couched in an article about three new cast members joining the project. One notable aspect of the film is the fact that, for the first time since 2013's Insidious: Chapter Two, it will take place in the present day, with ten years having passed since Insidious 2 and Dalton now reaching college age. In fact, the film will begin with Josh taking Dalton to the East Coast to attend a prestigious university, where his demonic troubles will begin anew. Read the full synopsis below:

Set ten years after the end of Insidious 2, Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) heads east to drop his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) off at an idyllic, ivy-covered university. However, Dalton’s college dream becomes a nightmare when the repressed demons of his past suddenly return to haunt them both.

Patrick Wilson as Josh Lambert in Insidious Chapter 2

It is unknown how involved Josh Lambert will be in the main plot of the film. Considering the fact that this is Wilson's directorial debut, he may intentionally be sidelining his character to focus on his other duties. However, the plot does specify that they are both haunted and Josh is one of the few surviving characters to have enough experience with The Further to help his son, so it's entirely possible that he will have more of a hand in what happens at the university campus than the synopsis lets on.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Dalton has changed in the intervening decade. The dynamic between himself and the demons that haunt him will certainly change now that he's not a vulnerable child. However, there is hardly a more vulnerable time in a young adult's life than their first time leaving home, so Insidious 5 will have a lot of material to work with.
